Chapter 1

10 Feb

Raindrops spiralled down majestically, landing on car windows, and sliding down – only to be met with a splatter as it hit the window pane. The sky, grey and clumsy, looked around in jealousy at floating green leaves that were free from any burden, huffing and puffing small bursts of wind. A cat screeched in the distance as a raindrop landed on its silky fur, turning the softness into a matted patch of hairball. Horns blared as the cars splashed through the road, soaking anyone who was unlucky enough to be within reach of the deep, endless puddles of murky winter water.

Amatullah sighed, and shivered, wrapping her arms around herself, while trying to tame her wild jilbab that was like a black monster taking over her. The wind stopped, and sighing in relief, she let her arms hang loose, letting her muscles relax once again. She peered into the rainy mist, looking for that super-special red car to come and zoom her away back safely home.

Instead, she was met with a big splash as it trundled towards her, stopping two metres ahead of where she was standing. She looked at her watch and rolled her eyes. Half an hour late as usual. Oh well, she thought, at least springs round the corner.

She hustled inside the car, not wanting to make the blaring horns any worse for holding up traffic. Her brother sat there, a big wide grin on his face, his eyes glittering with excitement.

Assalaamu alaykum sis!” he said, his grin sill as wide.

Walaykum salaam. How are you?” she smiled, wondering what put him in such a good mood.

“I’m alright Alhamdulillah.” The lights turned red, and he stopped, and looked at her fully, studying her face.

“What? What’s up with you today?” she said carefully, “how come you’re so happy?”

He scrunched up his eyes at her playfully, grinning even wider, “Nothing is up…well, apart from the sky…” he looked up, in a daze, but it was broken very fast, as the hooting of cars snapped him back into reality. The lights had turned green.

Mashallah, beautiful description and a wonderful beginning to a story that promises to be brilliant. I actually shivered when I was reading about the rain, even though it’s quite warn in my room right now. I love the way you symbolised the dual nature of the weather: it’s majestic but also clumsy lol 😀
